Autism and Deafness

When a child has both of these disabilities is another big challenge. I once met a deaf child whom I guess had autism too although it was not professionally diagnosed because autism is one of the disabilities that do not get much attention in my country. This girl when asked questions she signs exactly what is being asked over and over again her teachers concluded that its because she does not understand sign language. Without the techniques like the ones that Mrs White teaches us it would not be easy to help children like this. I hope to share the information with my colleagues when I get back home so as the children get the necessary assistance.

  1. During the last few classes that we have had, I have really come to realize that if we are going to be Special Education teachers we should REALLY learn sign language! This is something that I have put off, but I realize how truly important it is! There are so many children in Special Ed. who use sign language as their primary means of communication.
