Okay...for the past two days I have tried to get a language sample recorded. Unfortunately all I have managed to record is the sound of moving desks and shifting chairs. :(
Any suggestions Mrs. White?

Moving desks and shifting chairs . . .a classroom. Quality of camera? Location of camera?
ReplyDeleteWhat is the specific situation in which the child is engaged in which you are attempting to capture his language? The total classroom setting? How often is this child going to have the opportunity to interact so that you will be able to capture 100 utterances?
Once you have identified a specific student you should then "isolate a situation" in which the child normally engages with a specific group of peers or family members. I do NOT recommend you audio and DEFINITELY NOT video tape in a whole classroom setting. If you do not have permission to video tape all of the children in the classroom you are actually not allowed to do this.
Once you have permission from a child's parent to audio or video tape them you can set up the recorder in a portion of the room when the child is engaging with other children during a center time or activity. Ensure the child is going to be actively engaged in using language with others.
The BOOK talks about IN SCHOOL language samples as he is addressing TEACHERS. For this project it may be best for you to consider doing this outside of a school setting.
