ESL
Today’s lesson made me think about what we were talking about in my English class. We had to write a paper based on a writing done by Anzudual, a Spanish speaking American born in the USA, where she got in trouble speaking Spanish in her classroom rather than English. This lead to a paper in which we were asked to discuss if we should have Spanish in your level classes. I was surprised by the negative level of responses that the class had. Most of them thought that it would be horrible to have Spanish in elementary level classes. Some of them even used examples of their children not having a good understanding of the English language, but excellent Spanish language. My paper as if often does sparked an argument, because I disagreed with this statement, because I think that Spanish should be taught along side English. I guess I feel that no one should be left out of a lesson it helps Spanish Speaking students learn English and English speaking students learn Spanish.

I totally agree with this. My little niece goes to Sayre, and they teach her sign language, as well as spanish. Well i forgot to mention, she is only 4, and is in the preschool level. I believe that the earlier you start a child with learning a different language, other than there home language is a great idea.
ReplyDeleteI agree that other languages should be taught and that the younger you are the better. You make a good point, I have heard several comments about having Spanish in the schools etc but I feel like it is going to be something that we wish we all had an understanding in because there are a lot of spanish speaking people in all parts of the United States, even in Ky. Personally I want my daughter to go to a spanish immersion school because I think it will be beneficial in the long run.
ReplyDeleteI think that it is great to teach other languages along with English. Just like Maxwell Elementary in Lexington, this is a magnet school but the students that come from there are fluent in Spanish. I believe that this helps substantially in the future for these students. I think there is major issues with it because it goes along with the fear of the unknown.
ReplyDeleteI agree Spanish should be taught in our schools starting in Elementary school. My stepfather is from another country and he grew up learning and speaking English along with his native language. When he moved to the U.S. he could speak seven different language because they were taught to him in school. In '99 when I had the opportunity to go to his home country and visit with his family his brother made his two sons speak English to use. They were 7 and 9 and could speak fluent English. I was impressed and a little ashamed that I did not know their language. So Yes, we should teach other languages in out schools.

I think that it would be better for children if they learned different languages earlier in their life. Since they are able to learn it so much faster when they're younger I think it would be a good idea to have other languages taught in elementary school. I think this would allow for children to be more diverse and to have a better understanding of other places in the world.

ReplyDeleteAccording to me, Spanish language should be introduced in schools for children. If they start learning it they will be fluent in Spanish by the time they grow and become a teenager. There are lots of job opportunities for a person who knows Spanish.
