Type Token Ratios (Semantics)

I was wondering if anybody knows if we have to sit down and count how many different words the child is saying. I know we can copy and paste the child's sample and do word count..but it said that we have to divide the total number of different words by the total number of words??

  1. For example these are six of the 182 different words from my transcription:
rock, lizard, top, certainly, thing, big,

Total Number of Different Words= 182
    Total Number of Words= 586
182/586= 0.31 Type Token Ratio (TTR)

I printed off what the child said & went through the whole transcription and highlighted each word that was different one time. I typed it into Word. Once I had all of the different words, I did word count and that gave me the total for the different words. I hope this helped you. It took me a couple of hours to do it. There might be a quicker way?

  2. Yes, you do have to count all of the words and the different words. If you use the tools in Word as I mentioned in class you can let the technology work for you. There is a Word Count, Find, Replace.

Think about how you could use these tools to help with this task.

  3. I know where to find the word count tool, but I cannot find the tool to find all of the different types of words. What is it called and where can I find it in word?

  4. I had to sit down and write them out and tally them. It took forever but I know it will be correct!
