Utterances

If a sentence starts with the word “so” or the sound “Oh” is it an utterance.

Examples are: “So, can we…..” or “Oh, by the way…..”

  1. For THIS project the way I am going to ask you to determine if it is an utterance is if it ADDS MEANING. Those words DO have a specific "grammatical structure." The word so is typically used as a conjunction. The word Oh is an interjection. There is a purpose for them in our speech. They do have meaning. So, if the words have MEANING they should be counted as an utterance.

If the child is repeating words or just saying something as a "filler" to think of what he is going to say or being silly then, no, those words should not be counted as utterances.
