left out
So one of my best friends who graduated in May came back to visit us this weekend. Her along with 95% of my friends are either DHH ed, Speech pathology, or ASL (ITP) majors/minors. When my friend started conversing with one of our friends who is deaf, I just stood there trying so desperatly to figure out what was going on. Afterwards she had to translate it for me. I can only imagine how frustrating it would be to live that constantly. I did see just how beneficial it is to have that language though. I only know Spanish, but ASL you can use when its loud or you dont want others to hear your conversations. I almost regret not taking ASL.

I agree that it is very useful! I am kind of biased because my major is Deaf Ed, but just to think how you can brighten a deaf person's life just by knowing how to communicate with them so they don't feel frustrated is amazing! You can pick up on it pretty easily though, I suggest taking it!! =)
ReplyDeleteI have an 8 year old that was born deaf. She was fortunate enough to receive cochlear implants at the ages of 3 and 5 though. Now, she can communicate and hear just like anyone else. But, there are times that we have trouble talking because of noises going on around. Its still a difficult for her at times, but for the most part she does great. I haven't taken the Sign Lang. class yet, but definately plan to. When she was young everyone learned signs to communicate, but now that she has implants, we don't sign as much. I definately need to brush up on it because there times that it can be very useful.
ReplyDeleteI know that she gets frustrated at times because she can't understand what someone is saying to her as do we when we have to repeat something over and over. Maybe thats just her age though. All in all, she is very lucky to have been given her implants and be able to hear and communicate.
hey erin thats how i feel in my ASL 202 class. I havent had ASL since last fall so I get frustrated easily when I can't remember a sign. I'm more receptive than expressive. If someone is signing to me I understand but when I try to sign back I get nervous and forget and I think too much. It doesn't help that I live in Lexington and I don't have anyone around to sign with but like Kayla said, you can pick up on some things that people are saying/signing.
