Substitute Teaching
How many of you substitute in the schools on your days off? I was just curious to see if anyone else subs. I highly recommend doing it if you have time. I started substituting last semester and I love it. It is a great thing to do to make sure education is what you really want to do. You have a whole class of eager learners all to yourself. You don't have EKU professors watching everything you do. It is a learning experience you have by yourself. Even if it is just one time I guarantee you will learn so much.

I do not sub in a class but I did AmeriCorp last year. There would be times the teacher would step out of the room and I would get to finish the lessons and it was a great way for me to see that I really do want to teach.
ReplyDeleteI have not subbed yet, but I was actually about to go get the packet at the Madison County Board of Education office and apply. Is there anything that I should be aware of? I am very excited because this will be more of my learning style, hands on/visual. I am just very excited to get started, even though Friday will be my only day off to sub. :(
ReplyDeleteI have been subing in a classroom now for the last 2 years in my hometown. You only need 12 credit hours to be sub as a paraprofessional. Before I decided this is what i wanted to do for the rest of my life, I went and subed for the day and loved it!!! I recommend to anybody to go sub for a day, it will really help you decide if this is what you really want to do.
ReplyDeletedo any of you substitute in Fayette County. I have always been interested, but I have just never known what to do to get started. If anyone has any idea about Fayette County just let me know!
ReplyDeletePatricia, I think it really depends on what county you sub in. In Casey where we are a decade behind everybody, it took a while for the background check to go through. I made a "Sub bag" and I put bandaids, stickers, extra worksheets, and a funny book to read to the kids. Take a bottle of water, you will not believe how quickly your voice will get rough from talking all day.
ReplyDeleteHey Jess! Fayette County is really easy to apply to. Just get on the website and look under employment for the sub link. You will be able to apply online. They need your transcripts as well, so go ahead and get those. You can also go down to central office to apply. I subbed for a year before I was hired and loved it. If teaching is the route you want to go, its a good way to get into the schools and get an idea of what schools you would like to work in as well as great experience. Not to mention, you get a chance to talk to principals and let them know that you are completing your degree and would love to be a part of their team once you are finished. Good luck! If you have any other questions about Fayette County, just let me know. I would love to help you get started in any way I can. We are always looking for good subs too. I can pass your name and number along once you get to that point.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!
