Grammar lesson 101

Tonight during one of my classes the professor asked for a student’s response to the topic we were going over, and the student’s response began like this:

“We was going….”

I was – and still am – irritated that this came out of this student’s mouth. First of all, she is a junior in college and should know how to speak in front of an audience and two, because her major is ELEMENTARY EDUCATION!!!

  1. Kristen, I contstantly work on my own language. I try to increase my vocabulary, work on my grammar and how I address different people in conversation. I know I make many mistakes and want to improve how I communicate. I think it is very important that we all in kind, professional ways attempt to be good models in "pragmatically appropriate" ways. I wouldn't suggest correcting one's Grandma or Uncle Joe!

  2. Maybe it is just my northern upbringing but adults should be able to properly use the English tenses. A lot of my friends from here always talk like that, "We was", "We gonna leave", "We done that", "I ain't". It grates at my nerves but I am getting used to it.
