Labor day

I am curious, why is USA commemorating labor day on September 7 when the international labor day is May 1? Again what else happens during this day apart from it being a holiday? In my country during this day workers come together to share their experinces and problems they encounter at work. If there is any kind of a forum I would want to join in next year and get some experince.
