Pragmatics

I know we talked about pragmatics a few classes ago but I have been thinking about it and it occurred to me how much we overlook things like this and how if we are not taught this then we won't know. Prime example is that my daughter Denise and I were in Speedway getting gas. There was a man in front of us with a couple packs of beer and a long line behind us. The man in front of us turned around and was talking to Denise saying she was a pretty little girl. Denise responds with "Ooooh you stink!" and covers her nose and mouth. He turned red in embarassment/anger and people were laughing and I was like Wow! I told Denise she couldn't say stuff like that out loud (even if it is true). But she is 3 so she still says things or stares at people and asks what's wrong. I never thought about having to teach her about things like when and where are the right times to say things or how you say things but now I think twice!
