Agree or Disagree
I read this article online that stated that the human mind only needs to read the first and last letter to understand a word. How many of you agree or disagree? This article was discussing how texting had changed the use of language.
I have actually read articles about this before. It is pretty interesting. It is said that the order that the letters are put in do not matter and the important thing is that only the first and last letter are in their right spot. I know that makes no sense at all. I actually went and typed this in on google to read some jumbled up words and I actually could read a whole paragraph with no problems. In my opinion, after giving it some thought, I believe that a person would already have to be able to read before they could do that. Because, take for instance a beginner reader who still has to sound out their words before knowing what the words are and/or mean. A beginner reader would not be able to read jumbled up letters like that because they would not be able to sound the words out correctly. Here is a link if anyone is interested in seeing if they can read like this too!

Something else I found interesting was this link:
http://heupel.com/eclectic/2003/09/16/try-asking-a-typographer/
And it states that our eyes actually read over a word from 50 to 200 milli-seconds. Then it said something about words being in caps. Does this mean that it would not work if the letters were in all caps?
Thanks Amelia for the feedback!
ReplyDeleteI definitely plan to check out both links- :)
I think Amelia is right, you have to know the language first. Is that the Cambridge study? If not, look that one up, its pretty amazing how true it is.
ReplyDeleteYou definitely have to know the language well before you would be able to do this. I have had someone send me an email before that was like this the first and last letters were correct but the other letters were jumbled. I was able to read the paragraph, but it did take longer with certain words. I think this is a very interesting concept.
ReplyDeleteI think its crazy and amazing that the same time how we can figure words out just by the beginning letter and ending letter. Though it takes a little longer to figure something out, it can be done. I was in a training for work over the summer and we were discussing hard it is for chldren that have learning disabilities and what they might see on paper. We had to try and get through a story from a childs view. It was pretty rough at first, but we got through. It really made me stop and think twice about how I work with the students in my class and whether or not I am giving them enough time to answer or read, etc on assignments.
ReplyDeleteWe did an example of this in my PSY 200 class last year. The professor made us read a paragraph that did this, and it seemed to work. Almost all of the students were able to read the paragraph and were able to summarize what it said. It was really cool activity to do.
