Communication

I have just started my observation at an elementary school. I started working with the after school program. I sat in one of the lessons that was done by a graduate student. The class was a group of 4th graders. Their lesson was on communication. She had the students define communication and talk about different ways to communicate. She also talked about how we communicate without talking and what emotions we express. It was just funny to see 4th graders talking about something that I also have been talking about. However, during the lesson the graduate student used the wrong tense of a word in a sentence. She did not even stop to correct herself. I looked around the room to see if anyone other of the teachers noticed. But no one said anything. It made me think of what Mrs. White said about teaching. If the teacher does not even use the right tense how are the students supposed to learn what is right?

  1. I guess it would be pragmatically inappropriate if we made yellow grammar flags and every time some one said something that was grammatically incorrect we got out the flag and started waving it shouting, "Grammar!!". Although I almost feel like it as often as I hear phrases such as, I done did, I done went, he seen, etc.

It reminds me of Bon Qui Qui who wouldn't hesitate to remark, "Rude!" Except it would be us who would be the rude ones if we actually pointed it out! Finding an appropriate time and place to say anything at all is tricky. Modeling appropriate use at all times is so important.
