My "hearing problem"

A few days after starting preschool my teacher approached my mom with concerns about my hearing. This came as a real shock to my mom because she had never noticed me having a problem. The teacher explained that when she would call on me in class or ask me a question it took her a few times before it got my attention. After having this brought to her attention my mom took me straight to me doctor to have my hearing tested...everything came back fine. This left everyone a little stumped until something suddenly clicked with my mom. She asked the teacher what name she had been calling me by, the teacher replied "Ashley." This caused my mom to quickly realize my hearing was not the issue. I didn't know my name was Ashley because everyone I had been around had always called me Sissy. It gives us a good laugh to look back on it now, but I'm sure this happens a lot; it is automatically assumed there is a major problem before someone realizes there is a simple solution.

  1. This is so funny. I teach at an elementary school in my hometown, and you would think that this doesn't happen all the time, but it does. Usually in some case we find out that they would like to be called by their nickname, sometimes we do call them by it, but if its names like bubby or sissy we tell them thats its a special nickname just for their family to call them.

  2. I also teach in Fayette county and can safely say that I have not run into this problem yet. However, I have been talking to a student and they refer to another student as bubby or sissy. In those cases, I quickly realize who they are referring to.

  3. That is so funny!! Well to look at it now I'm sure at the beginning when it was all occurring it wasn't so funny! However at the daycare I work at there is a little boy who has gone there since he was six months old and is now 4! When he was an infant they gave him the nickname Big Poppa! Everyone calls him Big Poppa so one day we were in the play gym and I forgot and called him by his actual name which is Caiden. He wouldn't respond to me so I walked up to him and said Caiden I was trying to get you attention! He said my name is Big poppa! I just busted out laughing b/c he straight up told me caiden was not his name!

  4. Oh, my gosh, what a mix-up! Well, it’s a good thing your mom thought to bring you to the doctor right away to see if anything was indeed wrong! At least you all found out that the only problem was that you didn’t know your name at the time! Haha! It all turned out much better than anyone expected.

  5. Out of concern, your preschool teacher made an assumption about your hearing that probably anybody would’ve made, since you weren’t responding to your name. Your mom did the right thing by taking you to the doctor first to see if anything was wrong before buying hearing aids right away. Many people make the mistake of buying hearing aids only to be told afterwards that they didn’t need them in the first place. Good thing that you didn’t actually have a hearing problem!
