Demonstrating Your Understanding

Many of you have asked about doing additional work to demonstrate you do understand the content we are studying and how it connects/relates to the real world.  You shared a variety of ideas of HOW this could be accomplished via your reflections.

The following are YOUR ideas.  You may choose ONE of the following to complete.
  1. An additional observation (could be done at Model).  Teacher questions would NOT be required.  A similar rubric would be developed but not the exact one.  The focus would be on identifying how specific elements of language are addressed in the instructional setting and connect this to specific material in SED260.
  2. Participation in a threaded discussion or blog discussion (in addition to monthly blog) relative to the topics of the questions on Test 3.  At least 6 students would need to choose this option in order for there to be effective discussion/interaction among the students regarding the topics.
  3. Oral Q&A/discussion of the same topics presented in the threaded discussion/blog discussion.  This would take the format of a "panel discussion."  Thus it would require a group with a minimum of 3 students who would want to do this.  It would have to occur outside of class time - as would all of these learning opportunities.
  4. Write a "response" to a "real-life scenario" which involved an issue requiring you to demonstrate your understanding of the role of language in learning of a child with special needs.
Notes:
  • All choices will provide you the opportunity to earn an additional 20 points to be added to any assignment/assessment you wish.
  • If you wish to complete one of the options YOU MUST RESPOND to this post or email me your choice of assignment by Monday, November 30th at midnight.
  • ALL extra work must be completed by Friday, December 11th.

  7. Thank you, early birds, for designating your choice. I have created the threaded discussion in Blackboard. I will develop the other options and discuss with you on Monday.

At this time there is NOTHING you can submit.

  13. Thank you for giving us these options. I would like to do the discussion or real life scenario. Can we do both or do we need to choose only one?

  14. This entire opportunity is worth 20 points. I encourage you to do/choose any or all that you feel like will help you learn the content and material.

The online threaded discussion will be available in Blackboard. Some of you may want to monitor that to help you understand some of the concepts being disucssed. The discussions may assist you or provide information if you choose to respond to the real life scenario and turn that in for evaluation/scoring. Others may just want to participate in the discussion and earn your points through the posting rubric there.

Yet others may monitor the threaded discussion but instead of WRITING choose to participate in the oral discussion groups which would meet one night after class.

A rubric/scoring guide is available for each option and again, ONLY ONE OPTION will be scored for the possible 20 points.

  17. There is now a folder in the Assignments section/tab on Blackboard that contains all of the material you will need for this Extra Learning Option.

We'll discuss in depth in class tomorrow.

  20. I would like to do an extra observation. My major is Communication Disorders and for another class I have to observe a speech therapy session. Mrs. White, would it be okay if I use that as an additional observation for this class? I thought it would work well and I would be able to relate it back to what we have talked about in class.

  23. Sandy, Absolutely! Maximize your learning by multitasking ;)!! Certainly it is acceptable to use the time in that observation to develop the "report" necessary for this course. The key is use the NEW/REVISED RUBRIC already located on Blackboard to assist you in "look fors" while there and how to write your report. The rubric is in the Extra Learning Opportunity folder in the Assignments tab.

  24. Natalie, I will grade the October blog when I do this month's. I'm still in the catch up mode and figured the blog grade (since students can count their own posts and know their grade) was the one that could wait to be completed.
